The State

31 JULY - 10 AUGUST | EXPLOSIVES FACTORY
The State

VENUE

by marli jupiter & rhi bryan

Look at the state of this place!

Four states are lorded over by foppish drag-king Daddies, all under the thumb of an elusive and shadowy figure known as Mummy. This State’s mining equipment is existentially depressed. Which State is injecting their fish with oestrogen. That State charges tolls for every step you take. What State just approved a leg-breaking initiative to fill hospitals.

Democracy is falling apart at the seams.

Young optimist Flung embarks on a nationwide quest to find his mother. A series of increasingly absurd catastrophes sees Flung team up with a group of radical leftists called the Common Dog Fucks (CDF). Handing out flyers isn’t getting anything done, Flung’s mother is nowhere to be found, and things are only getting worse by the minute. In the face of overlord Mummy and her ruling Daddies’ political clusterfuck, Flung and the CDF must get revolutionary to save their nation.

The State is a visually arresting, scathing commentary on the state of Australian politics. Phallic puppetry, glorious drag, and biting comedy sees the state of our nation dissected like never before.

Marli Jupiter and Rhiannon Bryan

Marli Jupiter (they/jup[iter]/them) and Rhiannon Bryan (they/she) are Boorloo based multidisciplinary theatre makers and recent graduates of WAAPA’s Bachelor of Performing Arts Theatre Making (Honours) program. Their practice dances on the intersections of drag, puppetry, clowning and physical theatre. Their work dives into the absurdity of queer existence and social narratives through camp and abstract lenses.
