Claire Come Home

2 - 6 JANUARY | THEATRE WORKS
Claire Come Home

VENUE

by amelia newman

“Little mouse, we hold you a funeral. I’m sorry you were dead in our junk draws. I’m sorry I threw you across the room. I hope you flew.”

Look. I don’t want to kill myself, it’s just… I do think about cutting my hands off.

Beth, Claire’s best friend, is stuck at home. Jared, Claire’s boyfriend, is here too.

But Claire isn’t at home. Claire is in hospital recovering from a suicide attempt. And no one knows when she’ll be coming home.

As blood leaks from the kitchen cabinets, conversations turn into dance numbers and jokes turn into nightmares, CLAIRE COME HOME is a dark comedy about the absurdity and grief of waiting for a loved one to get better. This trope-flipping play asks you to sit on the couch and mind the seven foot laundry pile while the supporting characters take the spotlight.

"(Newman) delivers an exciting and contemporary theatrical work that’s sharply conscious of the restlessness of youth"
— Daily Review

“[Newman’s] brain works at a hundred miles an hour and their previous writing has always exposed truths about youth and humanity but not always in an easy-to-digest way.”
– Keith Gow, Theatre First

The Claire Come Home team would like to extend their deepest thanks and gratitude to Born in a Taxi and Kinetic Theatre for letting them use their rehearsal space. One of the biggest barriers to emerging artists making theatre is affordable rehearsal space, and we wouldn't have been able to do this without their help.
