Expression of Interest 2027: Theatre Works General Season & Midsumma Festival programming

Applications Close: Sunday 23 August 2026

WHAT WE SEEK

Theatre Works invites artists, producers and companies to submit expressions of interest for presentation in our 2027 season. This callout includes:

  • General Season Programming

  • Midsumma Festival 2027 Programming

General Season (January-December 2027)

We’re looking for live performance works that surprise, challenge and invite.

Whether you’re bringing us a fully realised production, a work-in-progress or an idea you can’t stop thinking about, we want to hear from you. Works can be ready to present, in development or at the initial idea stage. We welcome all forms of live performance, including projects that intertwine forms, and site-specific works that you hope to present with our support.

We welcome applications from artists of all career stages, backgrounds, abilities, ages and identities. We’re interested in building relationships that support artists and their work over time - not just presenting finished productions.

Midsumma (17 January - 7 February 2027)

As a proud Midsumma venue partner, Theatre Works is committed to amplifying LGBTIQA+ voices, stories and creative practices.

We welcome expressions of interest from queer-identifying artists, creatives and/or producers, as well as projects that explore queer identities, histories, cultures and/or futures. We’re interested in projects of scale and ambition for our Mainstage, as well as fresh, experimental and intimate works for the Explosives Factory.

WHAT WE PROVIDE

Theatre Works’ 2027 season will include a mix of Theatre Works-produced and co-produced works. There are no upfront costs to artists.

All works receive:

  • Venue access and staffing, including technical, front-of-house and box office support

  • Marketing and publicity support

  • Ticketing services

Produced works are produced and presented by Theatre Works in-house. All artists are paid and contracted by Theatre Works, with rehearsal space and production costs covered. Budgets are determined on a per-show basis and shared prior to confirmation.

Co-produced works are co-produced and co-presented with independent artists and companies. Artists receive producing and administrative guidance, alongside a generous box office split, determined and agreed prior to confirmation.

Midsumma productions are co-produced and receive the same venue, marketing, ticketing and technical support as our general season co-productions.

VENUES

THEATRE WORKS: 14 Acland Street, St Kilda – 146 seats | large black box with proscenium seating | full technical capabilities and fully accessible | works of scale, ambition, and audience reach.

EXPLOSIVES FACTORY: Rear 67 Inkerman Street, St Kilda – 60 seats | black box with stair-only access | immersive and flexible space | development and presentation of new, experimental and intimate works.

HOW TO APPLY

Please apply to the form linked in this post by Sunday 23 August 2026.

A note on the application: We welcome projects at all stages of development, so don't worry if you can't answer every question just yet. This EOI is a starting point for us to understand you and your work, and to begin conversations that can develop over time.

You are welcome to respond in the format that best suits your project and your team - written responses, video, audio, images, or a mix of these. All media should be provided within the form as links and be within the specifications provided.

For more information or assistance with your application, contact: krystalla@theatreworks.org.au

Note: outcomes to applications will be shared by early October
