In this week's Backstage Blog, we get chatting with director Maude Davey about their upcoming show, STORKED! Keep reading to find out more about the insider scoop on the rehearsal room!
Q. What should audiences expect when they come to see STORKED?
A. Storked is a lot. It’s a live body horror movie: creepy and blood-soaked. It’s an hilarious camp parody of gender norms. It’s a critique of the oppressive imperative to procreate which lies at the heart of the hetero-normative project. It’s an intimate exposure of what it feels like to live with endometriosis. It’s hysterical. It’s horrifying. It’s overwhelming. It’s funny.
Q. Have you taken inspiration from anything in particular in the direction of this show?
A. I never know what I’m inspired by directly at the time. I can look back and identify where my ideas came from, but in the moment I can’t see it clearly. 'The Substance' is probably in there somewhere. I’m a clown at base, I am always looking for the next gag. But I want people to laugh and I want them to feel things.
Q. Why is this show so important to you?
A. I’m passionate about working in Queer spaces, figuring out how to articulate new, queer ways of being in the world, or being in queer bodies. You know I don’t much like plays, where people pretend things and expect me to care. I like a show like this in which nobody’s trying to make us believe things, it’s about this mad life being reflected in glorious, ridiculous, interesting ways. I only really work as a Director on new writing or in a devising space. I’m interested in this bit, figuring out something new, rather than finding new ways to do things that have been done before.
Q. What do you hope audiences take away after seeing STORKED?
A. I hope that people enjoy it, feel engaged and alive all the way through it. I hope for an experience which makes some sort of emotional sense. Take aways? I don’t know… maybe it’s possible to live differently?
Q. What has been the most memorable moment throughout this creative process?
A. Memorable moment so far: "Mess Day" during our March development, and how effectively ‘horror movie’ it was to watch Teo bleeding out from a sauce bottle tucked down their pants.
