19th century French author Gustave Flaubert spent much of his life working at his own creation of the story of THE TEMPTATION OF ST ANTONY. He was inspired by Bruegel’s painting which he visited as a young man.
Four Larks, applying their adventurous brand of original music and theatrical adaptation, re-maps this famously unstageable work. The all-consuming resolve of St Antony is tested while Flaubert labours over his lifelong endeavour. This wild and unwieldy narrative hurls both author and character together through a philosophical maze of time and space as they hunt for the possibility of an absolute truth, a flicker of light in a nihilistic abyss.
