23 July - 8 August 1981
In 1948 the first Holden was launched. Twenty five years later in 1975, the world began running out of petrol. It’s now 1981. How long will the petrol last?
THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD SHOW was a play about the effect of the car on our lives. The first half takes place in 1948 in a small radio station in Melbourne. A special musical program is being presented to celebrate a great new event for Australia. The launching of the FX Holden, the first complete Australian car… The Second half takes us forward to 1981 as ten ordinary people journey on the roads of Melbourne. To a radio soundtrack of patter and pop, we experience with them the split-second ramas, the near misses, the small triumphs of a Night On the Road…
