4 – 21 September 2008
THE LONESOME WEST is the third instalment in Martin McDonagh's award-winning Leenane trilogy. It tells the story of Coleman and Valene Connor, whose dysfunctional co-habitation plays out a hilariously dark vision of the human condition.
The Connor brothers live modest lives, gleaning joy from simple pleasures: drinking, joking with the foulmouthed Girleen, tormenting Father Welsh, and fighting with each other...constantly and brutally. When, in an attempt to salvage their relationship they confess all to each other, the results are explosive.
McDonagh excels in reinventing the green pastures of Ireland with a distinctive blend of violence and wit. His quick-paced dialogue and shocking onstage action, seen locally in the MTC productions of The Beauty Queen of Leenane (2000) and The Pillowman (2007), make him the Tarantino of theatre and arguably the most influential young playwright in Britain today.
THE LONESOME WEST is the inaugural production of Tiny Dynamite Theatre, whose aim is to produce small-scale theatre with a big impact. When asked why he selected this play as the company’s first show, founder Mark Tregonning says:
“THE LONESOME WEST really delivers a piece of tiny dynamite. Although it’s set in a small town in the middle of nowhere with most of the action taking place in one room, when these characters get together it feels like World War III.”
