PEDRO AND THE CAPTAIN, by Uruguayan writer Mario Benedetti, is not about the confrontation between a monster and a saint, but that between two men, two flesh and blood human beings, with their individual zones of vulnerability and resistance.
The distance between them is, above all, ideological, and it is perhaps there that the key to other differences lie.
This play concerns those embracing morals and spirit, sensibility before human suffering, the complex distance separating courage and cowardice, little or much capacity for self sacrifice, as well as the gap between betrayal and loyalty.
