Why has Sophocles' classic survived for so long? Essentially, because it is a document of the human condition - it is as relevant to today's audience as it was to the classical Greeks in 431 BC. In this production OEDIPUS REX (Watling translation) will be set in a modern context - the crumbling regime of Thebes will be not dissimilar to the current American regime.
