Joan raises her hand to the sky, it bursts into flames. Everywhere there are women burning. White ash falls.

Joan is a teenage girl. A virgin soldier who will convince an army of men that she hears the voice of the divine. Her body will become the site of a nation’s anxieties and hopes. She will burn.

Realised in black and white, JOAN pays homage to the art of live oration and silent film.

Following the immersive portrayal of Oscar Wilde’s Dorian Gray in Room of Regret (2013), Theatre Works is delighted to premiere The Rabble’s poetic exploration of France’s medieval heroine, Joan of Arc.

“Joan might be THE RABBLE’s most visually stunning and cohesive work yet. It’s incredibly sophisticated storytelling, and utterly compelling... Perhaps this is THE RABBLE’s greatest triumph… The result is a searingly relevant piece of work that urges us to stand up, make our voices heard and remember those who came before.”
★★★★ ROSE JOHNSTONE, TIME OUT

“Davis and Valente keep their audience in a vice, foreboding permeating the work.”
★★★★ JANE HOWARD, THE GUARDIAN

“This company's design-led experimental theatre rarely fails to be arresting, either in the rigour and accomplishment of its visual poetry, or capacity to stimulate the mind.”
“Almost everything The Rabble has made since it was founded... has been extraordinary.”
★★★ ½ CAMERON WOODHEAD, SYDNEY MORNING HERALD

"It feels like a privilege and honour to be able to attend theatre of this caliber."
