31 May – 18 June 2017
Two children create a documentary of a history they cannot remember.
Inspired by the biblical BOOK OF EXODUS, Fraught Outfit’s latest production is a radical, poetic response to an ancient narrative of plagues and miracles, violence and division, punishment and liberation, the drowned and the saved.
BOOK OF EXODUS is the final instalment in Fraught Outfit’s Innocence Trilogy, which also includes ON THE BODILY EDUCATION OF YOUNG GIRLS (Neon Festival 2013) and their highly acclaimed production of THE BACCHAE (MIAF 2015, Dark Mofo 2016).
Theatre Works is proud to present BOOK OF EXODUS in two parts; Part I premieres in June 2017, and Part II at Theatre Works in October 2017.
"Adena Jacobs has created a work that stuns visually, draws you into its ritual, and leaves you haunted by troubling depths. It's one of the rare shows you wish were longer and Part Two, to premiere later this year, can't come soon enough."
★★★★ CAMERON WOODHEAD, THE AGE
“The play brings the paradoxes of performance into sharp relief: the past, as embodied and inscribed history, playing out in a wholly absorbing present; a mostly wordless play that interrogates one of the most significant texts of Judaic culture.”
ALISON CROGGON, THE MONTHLY
"Beautifully executed"
SARAH BALKIN, THE CONVERSATION
"A fascinating, ambitious undertaking; and one that I am eager to see to its conclusion."
ROSE JOHNSTONE, TIMEOUT
"Fraught Outfit should be applauded for trusting young performers to tackle sophisticated concepts throughout their Innocence Trilogy."
ELIZABETH QUINN, WEEKEND NOTES
"Book of Exodus comes to an affecting conclusion and a strong final image, and there is no denying the artistry that has gone into it."
