NA-IBA: The Other, A Look at Medea
DIRECTED BY ROMAN BERRY

15 - 17 OCTOBER | EXPLOSIVES FACTORY
DIRECTED BY ROMAN BERRY
She crossed the water. She knew things they didn't have words for. She made herself useful. Then she was asked to leave.
Na-iba - The Other is a performance development work by Divergent Theatre Collective, drawn from Euripides' Medea and made entirely in the present tense.
A woman arrives. Not as myth. As rupture. The ensemble holds its breath. Small rituals caught mid-air. True. Unhidden. Many mother tongues bracing at once.
An ensemble with roots across the Philippines, India, Malaysia, Chile, and Vietnam & Iran ask where this ancient story of displacement, betrayal, and rage still lives — in the body, in the mother tongue, in the memory of a border crossed. Built through the Tinikling methodology, developed by Artistic Director Roman Berry through his Adhocracy Residency at Vitalstatistix, the work locates story in the body before it reaches language.
This is not a retelling. It is a reckoning.
The audience is not outside the work. They are in the room with it. Followed by an open post-show forum with the ensemble.
One myth. Many ways of knowing displacement.

MEET THE ARTIST
ROMAN BERRY
Roman Berry is a Filipino-Australian theatre maker, director, and Artistic Director of Divergent Theatre Collective. Born in Cebu City, Philippines, he migrated to Australia, training first as a dancer at the Centre for Performing Arts, Adelaide, before completing his studies at the Flinders University Drama Centre, a foundation in physical performance and ensemble practice that continues to inform everything he makes.
He spent a decade making work across London’s Off West End and Fringe, directing and movement directing for companies including Arrows & Traps, The Hope Theatre, and The Bread & Roses Theatre, where he also served as Artistic Associate. In London he developed Body and Mind Wellness Workshops for The Voice of Domestic Workers, using creative practice as an advocacy tool for migrant workers, and planting the seeds of a theatre-for-all ethos that has shaped everything he has made since.
