For emerging artists
In 2020, Theatre Works continues its groundbreaking Associate Artist Program dedicated to emerging artists. The program presents emerging artists from various disciplines with the opportunity to be seconded to a Theatre Works production in line with their field. Artists have the opportunity to engage in the artistic process and extend their professional networks.
Artists also receive access to Theatre Works’ Creative Procuder and Artistic Advisory Panel to discuss their own work for potential presentation in 2021.
Participants will be selected through a nation wide open call out process.
2019 Associate Artist
Benjamin is a Melbourne based Film and Theatre Director – and graduate of the NIDA directing course in 2015. Previous to NIDA, Benjamin spent 4 years studying Media at RMIT in Melbourne. He co-founded Periscope Productions, and directed and designed Chatroom (2012),The Dice House (2013) and Attempts on Her Life (2014). Benjamin also directed and designed independent productions: Sugar Sugar for MKA and The Pillowman for Four Letter Word Theatre. In 2016, Benjamin undertook Directing Secondments at MTC and Opera Australia. In September 2017 he directed Fraternal by Jake Stewart for NIDA. In February/March he directed A Little Bit of Pain Never Hurt Anyone for Periscope which performed in Melbourne and Holden St Theatres for Adelaide Fringe.
Cathy Hunt is a director and dramaturg, who trained at The Victorian College of the Arts. There she directed Crave and held a Creative Graduate Scholarship in 2014. Her arts practice involves collaborating with fellow theatre-makers to make work extending beyond current assumptions of what theatre is or could be. Work includes, recently: Love/Chamberlain (Ralph Indie, Ainslie & Gorman) and The Super Queer Murderess Show Melbourne Fringe 2017, Arts House) which she co-created with Luisa Hastings Edge & Nate Gilkes. Cathy directed new play Tiny Remarkable Bramble (Invisible Circus 2016, KXT) and Life Without Me(Illuminate Educate, Seymour Centre). She was also dramaturg/ outside eye on Shannon Loughnane’s The One, Melbourne Fringe 2016. In 2015, she directed and developed Steppe (Melbourne Fringe, Newport railyards) and codevised Kafka Dances (Space Lab, Prague Quadrennial).
With Bee Allen Cathy formed The Impending Room to direct Judithin 2011 and new workDangerous Lenses, 2012, touring it to The Substation for Melbourne Fringe 2013. She held a six-month Dramaturgy Mentorship with Playwriting Australia I MTC in 2015 and was a PWA Dramaturgy intern in 2012. Cathy completed a directors’attachment on Fraught Outfit’s Book of Exodus Part 2 with Adena Jacobs and assistant directed for Tanya Gerstle on Optic Nerve’s The Mill on the Floss, both at Theatreworks. Upcoming works include Les Mamelles de Tiresias for Lyric at Chapel off Chapel in April this year and Her Father’s Daughter, a new Hedda Gabler for Hotel Now in Prahran Council Chambers, May 2018.
Julian Dibley Hall
Julian is an actor, theatre-maker, dramaturg, producer and graduate of the VCA. His recent theatre performing credits include A Little Bit of Pain Never Hurt Anyone (2018), Disgust (2017), Lifetime Guarantee (2017), Bucks (or A Bag of D*cks) (2017, 2016), No End of Blame (2016), Much Ado About Nothing (2016) and Florida (2016). He is Artistic Associate for New Writing Development at Voice In My Hands (VIMH) and co-facilitates the VIMH development programs dinner and a show and arvo tea and a show. He is also a co-founder and producer of Melbourne theatre company Bad Ducks Co. He was the 2016 recipient of the VCA Cassidy Bequest Scholarship for Theatre.
Monique is currently completing her Bachelor of Arts at the University of Melbourne. During her time there, she has designed and made the costumes for the University of Melbourne Musical Theatre Association’s production of ‘The Heathers’, and is currently working on their production of ‘The Drowsy Chaperone’. She has also worked as an Assistant Stage Manager to other companies including Healesville’s RedFox3. Monique also enjoys creating her own works, and is currently working on a series of radioplays to be broadcasted on Melbourne University student radio station, ‘The Fodder’.
Nadia is a Melbourne-based writer and researcher, currently pursuing a Master of Arts at the University of Melbourne. They previously trained as a playwright and dramaturg at the University of Sydney, completing a Graduate Diploma of Creative Writing, and working on numerous productions with the Sydney University Dramatic Society, including three original scripts, and dramaturgy on Hamlet (2014), A Midsummer Night’s Dream (2015), Twelfth Night, The Merchant of Venice, Design for Living (2016), and Gaslight (2017).
Romi is a Melbourne based contemporary director and theatremaker. She is passionate about creating work that starts meaningful conversation and examines the transmission of storytelling. Using live theatre and performance, Romi aims to provoke, question and explore life as we know it. Romi’s process stems from a background in Bodyweather and Physical Theatre training. After finishing a Bachelor of Performing Arts with Honours at Monash University, Romi concentrates on developing new contemporary performances and facilitating children’s theatre and performance. In 2017 she toured her Honours performance Singing Swallows -a new Holocaust performance for young audiences, and is currently integrating access for future performances. In 2018 Romi co-founded Alchemistudio -a creative studio collective. She is presently in her final year of a Masters of Directing for Performance at the Victorian College of the Arts. Vidya Rajan is a writer and performance-maker from Perth, now calling Melbourne home. She likes working across a number of genres and forms including live art, comedy, devised and written performance. Recent works includeLast night (WAYTCO), DeAr BeLoVed, A completely unified theory of you+me (TiNA), Aaaaunty (ASIATOPA), Solidity, Asian Ghost-ery Store (Griffin Batch Theatre Fest 2018, Melbourne Fringe Award 2015) and Friendquest (Fringe World Theatre Nominee 2015). She was a 2016 Wheeler Centre Hot Desk Fellow and completed a Masters in Writing for Performance from the VCA. She also has trained and performed extensively in improvisation with companies like The Big Hoo-Haa, iO Chicago, Naked Comedy Lab and Teatro De Los Sentidos. She was recently selected for a Room of One’s Own Residency with the Women’s Circus, Melbourne Festival’s Director’s Lab Program and Westerly’s Emerging Writer mentorship program. She is currently working with Lonely Company as a resident on new work.
