In today's backstage blog, we take to the soccer pitch to chat with Ellie Nunan (Goalie) and Erin Perrey (Team Captain) from THE WOLVES - a portrait of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness for nine American girls who just want to score some goals. Directed by Belle Hansen, THE WOLVES plays at Theatre Works from 10 - 20 June.

Q: Welcome to Theatre Works! Not long now until you move from the TWiSK Rehearsal Room out back to the stage. How is everything shaping up?

We are raring to get outta the rehearsal space and on to the astroturf!! We are ready for our audience and can't wait for them to experience the energy of the wolves!

Q: What was the range of soccer skills like when everyone showed up on day one? How hard have you been going on those ball drills?

Kristie is already a soccer superstar and a couple others were already playing on saturdays and the rest of us are really competitive. I personally (Ellie) have never kicked a soccer ball before. Same (Erin) but we both played Netball, as have most of the other gals. Now we're pretty good!!! I (Ellie) don't know the rules and should NOT be playing Goalie due to being 5 foot nothing but I'm pretty good! I did almost cry in one rehearsal though. Honestly we are very fortunate to have not only an amazing director but a superstar soccer coach! (Erin) I am getting to live out my captain fantasies and having grown up in a very competitive sporting family this show is an easy pitch!

Q: The Wolves has something of a cult following. Audiences obsess over the characters, their dynamics, the way the show changes by iteration - has stepping into the canon of such a celebrated and beloved modern classic played on your mind at all? How much do you make your own?

I know it was THE PLAY in America, and we knew of it when auditioning, but the ones who know the show are like "OMG which number are you!" But at its core it's just a great piece of writing that allows you to bring your own essence to it, which will make every production of the show completely unique. It's a privilege to perform such incredible writing!

Q: What do you think will surprise audiences about this production of The Wolves?

How good we are at soccer. Kidding (not really!). Belle's staging allows each audience member to have a unique point of view so the surprise will come from the foyer chat after the show. Also not forgetting it packs an emotional punch especially for those who have never seen it before.

Q: What has been the most memorable moment in your process so far?

Shanu's line deliveries, Alana's headers (they are beasts) and the never ending ball drills, they will be imprinted in our mind forever!
