MEET OUR REPLANTED ARTISTS: Conor Neylon

This week get ready to meet Conor Neylon, Connor makes up one half of the extraordinary young duo Neylon and Peele, known for their bold new Australian musicals. We chat with Conor about his year, his work and his upcoming production of The House On Fire At The Edge Of The World.

Who are you and what do you?

My name is Conor Neylon, and I am a performer, writer and composer based in Melbourne. I primarily write for Musical Theatre but am currently dipping my toes in the world of Screenwriting. At the moment, I’m performing (and composing) in “The House On Fire At The Edge Of The World” at Theatreworks, which I am creating with my writing partner Jackson Peele (cheeky plug, follow us @neylon.peele).

Star sign:

Aries.

In one sentence, give us the 411 on your work in our REPLANTED festival:

With an ambient-rock inspired score and an ensemble of actor/musicians, “The House On Fire At The Edge Of The World” takes our audience into a strange new world that celebrates the power of imagination and the lust for life in the darkest of times.

Highlight of 2020:

I (very luckily) got to escape Melbourne’s 2nd lockdown by heading up to Darwin for 5 months to work with a dance company up there, and help write and perform in some of their work. That was sick.

Favourite lockdown guilty pLEAsure:

Literally watching every TV show under the sun.

What are you watching?

A little late to the game, but I smashed through ‘Succession’ this year. Get on it.

What are you reading?

‘Adventures In The Screen Trade’ by William Goldman

What are you listening to?

Lots of Stevie Wonder, Bill Evans & Childish Gambino.

When you’re not being creative, what could we expect to find you doing?

This year I’ve become really interested in Mixology, so that’s something I’m trying to get better at.

Tell us a little bit about the rehearsal process so far…

Rehearsals have been exhausting in the best way. Due to the actor/musician convention, our ensemble has had to smash through the score over the past few weeks. It has been an incredibly collaborative environment for our creative team and cast to explore, and in essence, create this mystical world for our audience. It has been an absolute hoot so far.

What does 2021 hold for you?

Like a lot of artists/creatives at this time, 2021 will be very touch and go. But Jackson and I will hopefully be able to workshop some of our previous/new work and hopefully find platforms in which to share it with an audience that is keen to see new, exciting and adventurous Aussie MT. Watch this space!

The House On Fire At The Edge Of The World will have its world premiere on January 20, before closing on the 24th. To learn more about past works, new developments and future opportunities with Neylon and Peele, follow them on instagram @neylon.peele or visit their website below.
