In response to the unfolding health situation, we have made the difficult but necessary decision to temporarily close our venue and postpone the 2020 season of scheduled productions as a precautionary measure against the spread of COVID-19.
We would like to thank our audiences and supporters for all the messages of support we have received during these uncertain times.
The financial impact of closing our theatre is unparalleled. We are one of hundreds of theatres across the country that will go dark over the next month. The future of the performing arts in Australia is more uncertain than it has ever been, and we stand in solidarity with all our fellow companies, big and small, and with the huge workforce of freelance artists and casual workers who are the lifeblood of our industry.
For Theatre Works, which receives only 10% of its income through government funding, the effects of this closure on the company and the hundreds of artists we work with each year will be unprecedented. We will keep you updated on further changes as they become necessary, including the rescheduling of future events.
Ticket sales and philanthropic support make up the vast majority of our company’s income, and we are deeply grateful to patrons have already made the kind decision to donate the value of their tickets. These generous donations are being passed on directly to the artists behind each show. These acts of generosity will help Theatre Works and our artists get through this unprecedented period and return to present our shows at some time in the future. As a not-for-profit arts organisation, we depend on this support.
As with many areas of our economy, there are real viability issues for the arts as a result of COVID-19. We want to ensure we can continue to support and present the work you love when we open to the public again.
We would like to acknowledge the staff, independent artists and companies we work with for their ongoing passion and dedication. Thank you to the Theatre Works Board for their vital support in these uncertain times.
We are currently in the process of informing all customers and would like to assure all those who are affected that you will receive a full refund for your tickets. Due to the large number of inquiries, we are asking customers not to contact Box Office unless your query is urgent.
