Archive Feature: Herstory (1983)

Three years into our storied history, TW founding members Caz Howard and Susie Fraser starred in Herstory, a celebration of the lives of everyday Australian women from 1900 to 1983. As part of our birthday celebrations, we’re throwing back 37 years to Herstory. In 1983, Herstory was the tenth original production by Theatre Works in three years.

We scoured our archives and found a roll of film featuring Howard and Fraser in costume for Herstory. We scanned the film in and spliced it together to create the clip below.

Reviewed favourably by daily and local press, Herstory was considered a fine example of the process of local research for community theatre; the show arose from an earlier Theatre Works workshop project called Women of Three Generations.

HERSTORY – labour of love, pain and laughter represents a major dramatic experience, a recapturing of women, stories, facts and events lost from Australia’s history from the 1890’s to today. HERSTORY is lively and fast entertainment, a sound and image kaleidoscope of music, old broadcasts and hundreds of images and anecdotes of women.
