So… Where does your story begin? When you’re born? When you’re older? When you’ve passed on?
Or does it begin long before you even take your first breath?
Akaraka is a new play, centering around the experience of a young, Nigerian woman at a crossroad with her inner desires, and her ancestral belonging. The play is a celebration of culture, exploring the complexities that come with identity, love, and the reckoning of sacrifice. Our past is inextricable to who we are. Shortlisted for the Griffin Award, Akaraka reminds us that by making peace with our history, we have autonomy to create our future.

MEET THE ARTIST -
Empty Seat Theatre
Empty Seat Theatre is a group of young theatre makers with a goal in mind: to invigorate audiences through disruptive, bold and diverse storytelling. We believe in theatre that’s reflective of current society, headlined by ground-breaking new and upcoming Australian talent. We produce work that has ideas which excite, provoke and revitalise. A place where audiences can leave to discuss, debate and reflect. A company steadfast in the pursuit of making unapologetic work.
